HIV rates are stable what about other STIs?

Rates of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea have increased in populations of gay men around the world since the late 1990s and NSW has been no different.

In particular, syphilis rates climbed steeply here in the mid 2000s but have been declining slowly since 2009 which is good to see.

On the downside there's also a growing number of cases here and overseas where hepatitis C has been passed between guys during unprotected sex. Most cases have been in HIV positive guys and it's particularly important for sexually active HIV positive guys to get tested for hepatitis C as well.

Every two months I go off and get tested. It's not just about monitoring my HIV. It's about you know, have I picked up any other nasty? It's just a part of my general healthcare maintenance as a sexually active gay man.
