So if the number of new cases is stable, why are there more gay men living with HIV?

Treatments for HIV are now very effective at controlling the virus so it's rare for people with HIV to become sick and die from AIDS (the condition that develops in most people when HIV remains untreated). This is good news but it also means that with new cases being diagnosed every year, the number of gay men with HIV continues to rise.
